“Yedioth Ahronoth” Predicts Netanyahu’s Downfall
“Engaging in a prolonged legal battle, delivering a critical statement like the one this week, and facing struggles while knowing his departure was inevitable—these were much greater challenges. What has been achieved? The government will likely reconsider attempting to dismiss a security chief in such a hasty and improper manner, especially during an ongoing investigation, driven by personal or external motivations,” Eyal noted.

“Some may argue that it doesn't matter. In a few months, a new 'Shin Bet; chief is expected to be appointed through a proper procedure. Bar will leave behind a legacy of resisting political interference. However, if Netanyahu chooses the right person, he could end up with someone who not only accepts but also endorses such interference, perhaps even ‘stealing a horse, or two, or an entire stable.’ Ultimately, what matters is the outcome,” he added.

“The counterphase of Netanyahu’s trial is set to begin soon, marking a challenging period for both the prime minister and his supporters. This will likely cause significant discomfort for him. In such cases, the likelihood of a conviction tends to increase,” Eyal remarked.

“Ronen Bar’s testimony this week was not just a statement; it was a full indictment: demanding personal loyalty from a security chief during a legal dispute, halting recordings and protocols, and attempting to obstruct the trial. These are deeply concerning actions that reveal just how close we are to an authoritarian system in practice,” he emphasized further.

“The root of all these mistakes lies in the ‘Supreme Court’s’ decision to allow Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government, despite being indicted in a serious criminal case. What does all of this matter? Many will ask. ‘Democracy’ is now at risk. The answer is that gatekeepers cannot protect democracy on their own. They can provide oxygen, buy time, halt progress and offer guidance according to the law and the core values of the system. But even their power has limits. It is the people and the political system that must safeguard freedom. Netanyahu will be defeated, if defeated, either in the Knesset or at the ballot box,” Eyal asserted.
