Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter Reaffirms Support for Iran

The statement directly challenges claims by three European countries (UK, France, and Germany) to trigger the so-called “snapback” mechanism under Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015). The group emphasizes that any attempt to reactivate the 1737 Committee or its associated Panel of Experts under Resolution 1929 (2010) is legally and procedurally baseless.

The group’s position rests on three main pillars: the definitive expiration of Resolution 2231 on October 18, 2025; the absence of Security Council consensus regarding the European snapback claims; and the broader framework of diplomacy, dialogue, and international law, emphasizing Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear development under the NPT and the complete removal of unlawful sanctions.

According to the group, the European invocation of the snapback mechanism is “legally and procedurally flawed” and any measures to reactivate the 1737 Committee or its Panel of Experts are “legally baseless.”

Germany, France, and Britain (E3) formally notified the UN Security Council of their decision to activate the snapback mechanism to restore all UN sanctions against Iran on August 28, 2025.
