Iraq’s PMU on High Alert along Syrian Border amid Terrorist Threat, Lawmaker Warns

Miqdad al-Khafaji said Saturday that the PMU forces are closely monitoring the Iraq-Syria border for any possible movement by terrorist groups.

Al-Khafaji warned of the risk posed by potential militant activity along the border strip and said the PMU is tracking any suspicious movement to protect the frontier and prevent infiltration by terrorist elements.

He said the PMU is fully alert and prepared to respond to any activity by terrorist groups, particularly near the Syrian border, citing the complex security situation Iraq currently faces.

Turning to the situation in Syria, al-Khafaji described a state of security disorder there that he said creates favorable conditions for terrorist groups to operate.

He called this a genuine source of concern for Iraq, given the two countries’ long shared border.

He noted that these terrorist groups have previously fought the Iraqi army and attacked security forces inside Iraq.

As a result, he said, any resumption or reorganization of their activity near the border represents a direct threat to Iraq’s national security.

Al-Khafaji stressed that the current phase requires strengthening security and intelligence measures along the border and continuing surveillance of militant movements to prevent a repeat of past scenarios that inflicted heavy human costs on Iraq.

He warned that any negligence or laxity toward potential terrorist activity in border areas could negatively affect security in Iraq’s provinces.

He called for a firm response to the threat and said the security alert level should be raised to prevent any attempt to target Iraq or threaten its security and stability.

Iraq Welcomes More than 4.8 Million Foreign Visitors for Arbaeen

According to Iraq's Security Media Cell, 4887660 pilgrims from around the world had entered Iraq as of Monday night, with visitors continuing to arrive for one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings.

The Arbaeen marks 40 days since Ashura, the 10th of the month of Muharram, the day Imam Hussein [AS], the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred in the battle of Karbala. The event is one of the most significant observances in the Shiite Islamic calendar, drawing millions of pilgrims from Iraq and abroad each year.

Iraq's Security Media Cell said authorities continue to implement a comprehensive security and service plan in coordination with security forces, government agencies, and supporting institutions to facilitate the movement of pilgrims and maintain smooth operations at border crossings and along major transportation routes.

The agency said the latest figures showed that 4887660 foreign pilgrims had entered Iraq since the beginning of Muharram, with the number continuing to rise as visitors arrive from different countries.

The General Traffic Directorate said approximately 16000 officers and personnel have been deployed to regulate vehicle movement into and out of Karbala as part of the Arbaeen plan.

An Iraqi official told the Iraqi News Agency [INA] that the holy city of Karbala is witnessing the peak influx of visitors commemorating Imam Hussein [AS], with high attendance expected to continue through Tuesday afternoon.

The official said security and service plans were being implemented smoothly, with transportation operating across the city's four main routes through joint government and private-sector efforts.

Authorities have also ensured adequate supplies of drinking water and ice for pilgrims, while maintaining a stable electricity supply throughout Karbala to support uninterrupted public services during the busiest period of the pilgrimage.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi praised security personnel involved in securing the pilgrimage during a visit to the cameras, management, and control division at the Karbala Police Directorate.

Speaking via the police communication network, al-Zaidi thanked security forces for protecting pilgrims, organizing crowd movement, and carrying out their duties despite difficult weather conditions.

The World Health Organization [WHO] said it continues to support Iraq’s Ministry of Health and its partners in strengthening health preparedness during the Arbaeen pilgrimage season.

WHO Representative in Iraq Jameela Al-Raabi told the Iraqi News Agency that the organization's support focuses on planning, epidemiological surveillance, early disease detection, emergency response systems and coordination among health authorities.

She added that WHO is also providing training to strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers in managing mass-casualty incidents and public health emergencies.

Al-Raabi said the organization continues to cooperate with the Karbala Health Directorate, local authorities, and the Imam Hussein [AS] and Al-Abbas holy shrines to improve health planning, risk management, and public awareness campaigns.

She described the Arbaeen pilgrimage as one of the largest annual human gatherings in the world, attracting millions of pilgrims from inside Iraq and abroad.

Arbaeen Pilgrimage: World's Largest Peaceful Gathering

During the Islamic month of Safar, pilgrims traverse the deserts from Najaf to Karbala, a 50-mile trek embodying love and solidarity.

Imam Hossein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred in 680 AD for refusing to pledge allegiance to tyranny, becoming a symbol of courage, justice, and sacrifice.

Along the route, Mawkibs (volunteer service stations) provide free aid and hospitality, showcasing generosity and selflessness.

Arbaeen, meaning forty, signifies the end of mourning, and the pilgrimage represents a pledge to uphold Imam Hossein's values.

Arbaeen is distinguished by its inclusivity, with people of all faiths walking together, promoting dialogue and unity.

Upon reaching Karbala, pilgrims gather at the shrines of Imam Hossein and Hazrat Abbas (AS), deepening their spiritual connection through prayers and acts of charity.

The Arbaeen Pilgrimage exemplifies selflessness, unity, and resistance against oppression. The event transcends cultural boundaries, fostering understanding and compassion among diverse communities.

Despite its massive scale, Arbaeen remains peaceful, a testament to the pilgrims' commitment to non-violence and spiritual reflection.

The journey to Karbala is not merely physical; it is a transformative experience that cleanses the soul and strengthens faith.

Many pilgrims walk barefoot, enduring hardships as a symbol of devotion and empathy for Imam Hossein's suffering.

The Arbaeen Pilgrimage is a reminder of the enduring power of faith, love, and the pursuit of justice in a world often marked by conflict and division.

The values of Arbaeen inspire individuals to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity, and to work towards a more just and compassionate world for all.

As the pilgrims converge in Karbala, they create a sea of humanity united by their shared love for Imam Hossein and their commitment to his message of peace and righteousness.

This annual observance, held on the 20th of Safar in the Islamic lunar calendar, is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

Shia Muslims, particularly from Iraq and Iran, undertake pilgrimages to Karbala, some trekking hundreds of kilometers to honor Imam Hussein's (AS) shrine.

This tradition has persisted through centuries, representing a commitment to Imam Hussein's principles and a renewal of allegiance to his path.

Iraq’s newly appointed ambassador to Iran, Yasser Abdulzahra Al-Hajjaj, visited the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad during his first official trip to the city, ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage season.

Al-Hajjaj held a meeting with Ayatollah Ahmad Marvi, the custodian of Astan Quds Razavi, and also visited the resting place of martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei to pay tribute.

Speaking on the sidelines of his pilgrimage, Al-Hajjaj described Arbaeen as the greatest manifestation of solidarity between the peoples of Iran and Iraq.

The ambassador said millions of pilgrims from different countries, particularly Iran, travel the path of devotion to Imam Hussein (AS) toward the holy city of Karbala each year, adding that the massive religious gathering continues to grow in scale.

Referring to this year's pilgrimage, the Iraqi ambassador said around four million Iranian pilgrims are expected to attend the Arbaeen ceremonies.

Al-Hajjaj also described the Mawakeb (pilgrim service camps) established along the Najaf-to-Karbala route as one of the clearest manifestations of solidarity between the two nations.

The ambassador emphasized that serving the pilgrims of Imam Hussein (AS) is not merely an executive task but a manifestation of the culture of sacrifice, brotherhood, and friendship shared by the two Muslim nations—a culture that becomes more evident every year during the Arbaeen march.
