French Inflation Accelerates to 2.7% in August as Energy Prices Rise

France’s harmonised inflation rate, which is adjusted for comparison with other euro zone countries, rose to 2.7 percent year-on-year in August, up from 2.4 percent in July, Firstpost reported.

INSEE attributed the increase primarily to higher energy prices, with oil products playing a key role in pushing inflation higher.

The latest reading comes as markets continue to closely monitor inflation trends across the euro zone for clues about the outlook for interest rates and monetary policy.

The preliminary August figure will be subject to further revisions as additional data become available.

“There is a risk of hail, heavy rain with hourly accumulations of up to 30 millimeters (1.2 inches), wind gusts of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour (50-62 miles per hour), and intense lightning activity,” Meteo-France warned on US social media company X, Anadolu Agency reported.

Authorities expect “a significant risk of severe weather phenomena” during Wednesday’s episode, according to broadcaster BFMTV.

The alert came after severe storms swept across southern France overnight Monday into Tuesday, including a destructive tornado in the Aude department on Monday.

Stormy weather is expected to continue over the coming days. A stormy zone is forecast to develop Thursday “from the southern Massif Central to Lorraine.”

Rain and storms are also expected to shift eastward Friday morning, BFMTV reported.

The tornado struck the Aude department, ripping roofs from buildings, uprooting trees and damaging around 300 homes. Several people required medical attention, with some taken to hospitals, while emergency teams were deployed to assess the destruction, assist residents and secure buildings at risk of collapse.

Meanwhile, images from the area showed fallen trees blocking roads, damaged homes and debris scattered across streets as rescue teams responded to the aftermath.

The tornado struck amid severe weather affecting parts of southwestern France, where storms brought heavy rain and strong winds. Authorities continued assessing the damage as emergency services worked to restore normal conditions.

Tornado Tears through French Village, Dozens Injured

French authorities had placed swathes of the country's southwest on orange alert for storms, and numerous areas were hit by power outages and transport chaos.

In the Aude department, officials cancelled the third stage of the Vuelta an Espana cycling race, which was being held in the area, when a hailstorm forced riders to seek shelter.

The tornado hit hardest in the village of Pomas, population 1,000, damaging an estimated 300 homes, in some cases ripping their roofs off.

More than 120 emergency workers were deployed to the scene, local authorities said.

Fifteen of the injured were taken to hospital.

They included a pregnant woman who was hurt when her house collapsed on her, her husband told AFP.

The national weather service, Meteo-France, said winds had reached up to 117 kilometers (73 miles) per hour in the nearby village of Arquettes-en-Val.

Storms across southern France upended the transportation network, delaying trains, forcing road closures, and causing delays and cancellations at airports in Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse and even Paris to the north, said Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot.

An estimated 2,800 homes were left without electricity across 10 villages, officials said.

France sees several dozen tornadoes per year on average.

The impact of global warming on their frequency and intensity is unclear, according to Meteo-France.

France Detains 420 Over Wildfire Suspicions

Meanwhile, successive summer heatwaves and extreme temperatures across Europe have worsened the crisis. President Emmanuel Macron described the fires as potentially France’s worst since World War II.

Prolonged heat and drought have dried vegetation, allowing even small ignition sources to spread rapidly. More than 224,000 people were evacuated at the height of the crisis, while officials said human activity was responsible for nine in 10 wildfires.

The cases include suspected arson and fires linked to discarded cigarettes, barbecues, campfires, and other reckless behavior. Among those detained are 166 minors.

An initial review of 80 suspects found that 97.5% were male, with an average age of 32.5, including students, repeat offenders, and volunteer firefighters.

Authorities said the alleged motives varied, including revenge, financial gain, seeking attention, or challenging authorities. Experts cited by Le Figaro said clinical pyromaniacs account for fewer than 5% of fire starters.

One case involves an unemployed 23-year-old man accused of starting around 10 vegetation fires in the southeastern Var department between July 19 and 24. He was charged with destroying forests and scrubland by fire and causing irreversible environmental damage, facing up to 15 years in prison and a €150,000 [$175,000] fine if convicted.

Other cases involve a young volunteer firefighter who confessed to setting fire to twigs with a lighter and gasoline before retracting his statement, and a man who said he accidentally started a fire by discarding a cigarette. Both were indicted and placed in pretrial detention.

Bordeaux prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul told Le Monde that even throwing a cigarette butt or lighting a barbecue in wooded areas during drought can constitute endangerment of lives. Fire investigator Eric Dufayet similarly warned that during severe drought, “all you need is a simple lighter.”

Over 200 Firefighters Battle Blaze in Southern France

The fire broke out around 12:45 pm (1045 GMT) in the Lozere region, about 140 kilometers (85 miles) northwest of Montpellier, AFP reported.

Officials said it might have been sparked by a vehicle catching fire on a local road.

By late afternoon, the fire had burned some 153 hectares (370 acres) and continued to spread.

Around 270 firefighters from Lozere and neighboring departments were deployed, backed by four Canadair water bombers and two Dash aircraft.

A Lozere fire service spokesman said their combined efforts had helped “contain the blaze and save two homes” that were directly threatened.

“The flanks are being held. Work is now focused on the head of the fire, which remains inaccessible,” he added.

As a precaution, two hamlets in the municipality of La Tieule, directly in the path of the flames, were evacuated at around 5:00 pm, affecting about 20 homes.

“This is an area with a great deal of woodland. It’s extremely dry. The drought is unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time,” said Marc Toulouse, a senior fire officer in Lozere.

Local authorities urged residents not to call emergency services to report the blaze, warning that doing so could overload crews already fighting the fire.

French officials are still taking stock of the damage caused by a series of fires, mainly in the south of France, including largest wildfire since 1949, in the southwest Gironde region

According to INSEE, the number of unemployed people in France, as defined by the International Labour Organization, rose by 62,000 from the previous quarter to 2.7 million in the second quarter of 2026, while the unemployment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points year on year, Xinhua news agency reported.

Unemployment rose across all age groups, with the rate among people aged 25 to 49 reaching its highest level since the first quarter of 2021, it said. The unemployment rate among women rose to 8.2 percent, while the rate for men remained unchanged at 8.5 percent.

Long-term unemployment also continued to rise. Among the unemployed, an average of 671,000 had been without work and seeking employment for at least one year, an increase of 36,000 from the previous quarter and 116,000 from a year earlier, INSEE said.

French Livestreamers Given Suspended Sentences in Abuse Case

A criminal court in Nice found Safine Hamadi and Owen Cenazandotti guilty of violence against 46-year-old Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, as well as incitement to hatred for directing insulting and degrading remarks at him.

Graven died on August 18, 2025, while the two streamers were asleep during a live broadcast. Prosecutors said his death was most likely linked to pre-existing health problems and a fragile heart rather than the abuse itself.

The abuse took place over several days on the Kick streaming platform. During the trial, both defendants argued that the violence and humiliation had been scripted, partly staged, and carried out with Graven's consent.

Hamadi, who expressed remorse during the proceedings, received an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a €5,000 ($5,770) fine. Cenazandotti was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended, and fined €15,000.

The court also banned both men from posting on social media for six months.

"The conviction is mainly symbolic. We are satisfied with the ruling," Hamadi's lawyer, Tom Michel, said, adding that his client acknowledged some of the content was unacceptable and could not be justified as consensual or staged.

The court acquitted both defendants of manslaughter and exploiting Graven's psychological vulnerability. According to Michel, Graven had previously told police that he had consented to the stunts.

The case sparked widespread outrage in France after videos circulated online showing Graven being beaten, humiliated, and subjected to degrading challenges over several months.

According to reports, viewers were able to pay to encourage some of the abusive acts during the livestreams.

Hundreds Flee As Wildfire Rips through Southern France

The fire swept through wooded hills in the Var region, burning 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres) in just a few hours and prompting the evacuation of nearly 400 people, the area’s top official said.

“The fire is moving down Gros Bessillon Mountain at a very fast speed, which was not at all anticipated given the climatic conditions and weakening wind,” said Simon Barbre, prefect for the region located between Marseille and Nice.

He said evacuations took place around the villages of Cotignac, Montfort-sur-Argens and Correns. Many of those moved to safety came from Ponteves, where the fire started, and the nearby village of Sillans-la-Cascade.

Very dry conditions in the area have caused an extreme forest-fire risk, according to the French weather service Meteo-France.

Barbre said air crews were racing to lay down fire-retardant barriers ahead of the advancing flames.

An AFP journalist near Cotignac saw a huge plume of grey smoke billowing behind a ridge engulfed in flames.

“This fire is the absolute priority of the whole area right now,” said Var fire Chief Eric Grohin, adding that between 900 and 950 firefighters were deployed on the ground.

“It’s grown enormously, it’s spreading to other villages,” said Isabelle Scarica, one of around 50 volunteers in Ponteves preparing sandwiches for firefighters.

She said the situation was “a major disaster.”

One fire engine was damaged and four firefighters and two residents of Ponteves suffered minor smoke inhalation, according to local authorities.

Before aircraft were grounded for the night, firefighting crews carried out more than 100 water and retardant drops using eight Canadair water bombers, four-water-dropping helicopters and two Dash aircraft.

Fueled by repeated heatwaves and drought, the 2026 wildfire season began earlier than usual, and firefighters have been battling near-daily outbreaks across France in recent weeks.

Another major blaze burned 200 hectares and destroyed homes in the Var region between Sunday and Monday near Les Arcs-sur-Argens.

Nearly 40,000 hectares have burned in France since the start of the year, “far more than was burned during the whole of last year,” according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.

Wildfires were also active elsewhere in France.

In the Alps, a lightning-sparked blaze that began five days ago had burned 130 hectares in a remote area of the Ecrins mountain range.

On the Mediterranean island of Corsica, firefighters were still battling a blaze near Corte after nine days.

Paris Region's Record June Heatwave More than Doubled Normal Mortality Rate to Reach 3,000

"A very high excess mortality rate was observed in Ile-de-France (between June 22 and 28) during the heatwave," Santé Publique France said in a report recording 3,000 fatalities – "1,565 more deaths than expected", AFP reported.

The Paris region was one of the hardest hit in terms of excess deaths during the June heatwave, one of three that swept across France since May.

Scientists have linked the increasing frequency of extreme weather to man-made climate change.

Initial excess death figures from the June heatwave showed 2,000 more fatalities than expected across France, but the number was expected to rise.

The figure from the Paris region "mainly concerned people over 65, who accounted for 82.4 percent of the deaths", the agency said, adding that the number could still increase.

Deaths linked to heatwaves are not limited to the immediate effects of high temperatures, such as dehydration and hyperthermia, as some effects take days to manifest.

France's weather service said the 14-day June heatwave was even "more intense" than the 2003 episode that claimed 15,000 lives in France – although it was two days shorter.

The heatwave swept across Europe, breaking all-time temperature records in several countries.

World Weather Attribution, a network of climate scientists, said last month that the heatwave was the "most severe ever recorded" based on a three-day forecast of average peak temperatures over the region studied.

Such a heatwave would have been "virtually impossible" without the influence of climate change, they said.
