Xi, Putin Stress Strategic Ties with DPRK on Founding Anniversary

Messages from the Chinese and Russian leaders were given prominent coverage in DPRK media on Wednesday.

Xi stressed Beijing’s commitment to maintaining and expanding relations with Pyongyang, describing cooperation between the two countries as a longstanding policy of the Chinese leadership.

“We will continue to strengthen the strategic guidance for the relationship between the two parties and the two countries, join hands to promote the development of our respective party and national affairs,” Xi said, adding, “We are willing to work to continuously enhance the well-being and friendship of the peoples of the two countries and make greater contributions to promoting peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region and the world.”

The Chinese president also referred to his June visit to Pyongyang and his meeting with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un.

“You [North Korean leader Kim Jong-un] and I met again, opening a new chapter in the development of the relationship between the two parties and the two countries,” Xi said.

He further affirmed the political and ideological basis of bilateral relations, stating, “The two countries of China and North Korea are friendly socialist camps that protect and help each other and share a common destiny.”

“Vigorously safeguarding, consolidating, and developing the China-DPRK relationship is the consistent and unwavering policy of the Chinese party and government,” Xi added.

Putin, whose message was sent a day earlier, likewise pledged to continue strengthening Moscow’s relationship with Pyongyang.

“Without a doubt, together with you [Kim Jong-un], I will continue the closest joint efforts to further consolidate the comprehensive strategic partnership between our countries,” the Russian president said.

Putin linked closer Russia-DPRK cooperation to broader regional and international developments.

“This fully aligns with the interests of the peoples of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, ensures regional security, and will contribute to establishing a more just and multipolar new world order,” he said.

The statements come as relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have expanded significantly in recent years, alongside closer political coordination among the DPRK, Russia, and China.

Leaders and officials from several other countries also sent anniversary messages to Pyongyang, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, Belarus, Sweden, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Singapore, and Equatorial Guinea.

Kim Jong Un: Kang Kon Destroyer to Strengthen DPRK Nuclear Deterrence

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for the new destroyer in the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, Kim said deploying the warship off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast would send a “clear message” to the DPRK’s adversaries.

He also said it was time to exercise the country’s sovereignty “at sea and underwater.”

The 5,000-ton Kang Kon is the second destroyer of its class to enter service, following the Choe Hyon, which was launched on the DPRK’s west coast about three months ago, KCNA reported.

The new warship forms part of Pyongyang’s efforts to modernize its naval forces and expand its strategic capabilities at sea.

Kim said the DPRK’s nuclear naval capabilities are advancing and vowed to continue expanding its “most powerful strategic assets” in key waters to protect maritime sovereignty and regional security.

Meanwhile, the DPRK reshuffled its senior military leadership last week, removing Defense Minister No Kwang Chol and appointing Kim Song Gi as his replacement.

KCNA said the changes were approved at a meeting chaired by Kim on Saturday as part of “structural reorganization plans.”

The reshuffle also affects senior positions within the military and defense establishment, including the Central Military Commission and Political Bureau, alongside several other appointments and promotions.

US, South Korea, Japan Kick Off 5-Day Joint Military Exercise

The Freedom Edge exercise kicked off in international waters east and south of South Korea's southern island of Jeju, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing a statement from the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The drill began as scheduled despite the administration of US President Donald Trump shortening the bilateral Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise with South Korea last month in an effort to encourage North Korea to return to talks.

"The three nations will leverage the drills to enhance operational capabilities and joint response capabilities across multiple domains, including maritime, air and cyber, while maintaining a robust and stable cooperative relationship," the JCS statement said.

The drills will involve major maritime and air assets from the armed forces of the three countries, with a joint exercise control group overseeing the operations for their systematic and safe execution.

The Korean military said the joint drills are aimed at enhancing deterrence and response capabilities against North Korean nuclear and missile threats while safeguarding regional peace and stability.

North Korea has long denounced the allies' drills as war rehearsals.

The three countries will deploy six Aegis-equipped destroyers along with maritime patrol aircraft, fighter jets and refueling tanker aircraft, the report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The South Korean Navy is deploying the 7,600-ton ROKS Yulgok Yi I and ROKS Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong destroyers, said the sources.

Japan's Joint Staff of the Self-Defense Forces said last month that it will deploy the 7,700-ton Atago and 5,100-ton Asahi destroyers, P-1 maritime patrol aircraft, SH-60K helicopters and F-15 fighter jets.

The US Navy announced on social media last week the arrival of its 6,900-ton Arleigh Burke-class USS Benfold at a port in South Korea's southern city of Busan in a possible sign that it is joining the trilateral drills.

The commissioning ceremony, held Sunday in the eastern port city of Wonsan, was attended by North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, who called the 5,000-ton vessel "essentially an offensive destroyer" and part of "the state nuclear counteraction system," according to the Korean Central News Agency.

He was accompanied by his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter Ju-ae.

The Kang Kon's commissioning came a day before the start of a joint military drill between the US, Japan and South Korea which Pyongyang has long denounced as a “war rehearsal.”

"The new-generation destroyer should deal a deadly retaliatory blow at the enemies, as it is a force involved in the state nuclear counteraction system," Kim added.

Kim stressed the need to develop the country's navy into "a nuclear armed force" in order to carry out maritime defense and war deterrence activities "more clearly."

The Kang Kon has been commissioned into North Korean navy's East Sea Fleet.

The destroyer was commissioned less than three months after the North commissioned its first 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, into the West Sea Fleet.

Early this year, Pyongyang unveiled plans to build two large warships of more than 5,000 tons over the next five years, including 10,000-ton-class warships.

Pattaya Scandal: A Test of U.S. Military Resilience After 286 Days

The USS Abraham Lincoln has finally docked in Thailand following an unprecedented 286-day deployment, keeping roughly 5,000 American sailors and Marines away from normal life—and even regular access to shore—for months. Reports about the deployment point to exhaustion, psychological pressure, shortages of certain supplies, and difficult living conditions aboard the carrier, with the prolonged mission reportedly raising concerns about the mental health of service members.

Now, after months at sea, these forces have been sent to Pattaya for several days of rest, ostensibly to relieve the psychological pressure built up during their deployment. Pattaya has a long history of hosting American troops, and much of its nightlife-oriented tourism identity took shape during the Vietnam War. For that reason, the arrival of roughly 5,000 American service members was never viewed by Thai authorities as merely a tourism event. Pattaya police increased security measures, while the Thai government announced tighter monitoring of crime, sexual exploitation, and illegal activities.

But notably, the first incident was reported just one day after the troops arrived. Thai police said several American sailors became involved in a confrontation near Walking Street early Thursday morning while intoxicated. Police responded to the scene, and the U.S. Navy eventually returned the sailors to the carrier.

Local sources have also cited much larger figures, including at least 76 incidents or reports filed with police over unusual or violent behavior, 11 alleged sexual assaults involving hotel employees, 38 reported shoplifting incidents, 89 cases of public drunkenness, and nine violent confrontations with passersby.

These reports suggest that the issue of erratic behavior among American service members in Thailand may no longer be limited to one or two isolated incidents. Instead, it points to a potentially broader problem involving the psychological management of thousands of troops following a prolonged and exhausting deployment that reportedly fell outside normal military operating standards.

This is the crucial point: the issue should not simply be reduced to the “misconduct of a few drunk or unstable soldiers.” A 286-day deployment, prolonged exposure to a war zone, operational pressure, separation from family, and severely limited shore leave form a combination that can intensify psychological and behavioral stress among military personnel, potentially pushing exhausted troops to their breaking point. Independent reports about the Lincoln’s crew also indicate that psychological pressure during the deployment was significant.

Thailand’s preventive response is also telling. Increased police patrols, heightened monitoring of entertainment districts, and official emphasis on combating exploitation and crimes involving people under 18 indicate that local authorities took the potential social consequences of a large-scale military presence seriously from the outset.

But the significance of the Lincoln episode goes beyond the crimes allegedly committed by American service members in Pattaya. The carrier can also be viewed as an indicator of the declining operational resilience of the U.S. military amid its war of attrition with Iran.

The carrier and its roughly 5,000 personnel have been deployed for 286 days, including 264 consecutive days at sea, while a significant portion of that period was reportedly devoted to combat operations and the naval blockade of Iran. Reports in the U.S. media have pointed to severe fatigue, food-supply problems, infrastructure disruptions, psychological strain, and limited communication with families.

That means the issue is not simply the exhaustion of a single carrier. It raises a broader question about an entire military’s capacity to sustain a long, costly, and multilayered war.

If an aircraft carrier—one of the primary symbols of American military power—has been forced to place extraordinary pressure on its crew to maintain operational readiness through such a prolonged and exhausting deployment, and eventually makes its first full stop in months in Thailand, only for some of its personnel to become embroiled in such a scandal, it is reasonable to ask how much cumulative pressure the U.S. fleet, its crews, logistics networks, and supply chains can withstand if the war with Iran continues.

Within this framework, the Lincoln’s condition should be viewed as a serious warning about the limits of U.S. military resilience in a prolonged conflict—particularly one in which geographic distance, the need for a sustained regional presence, and the vulnerability of support bases increase the cost of maintaining such an operational tempo.

The central question, therefore, is not simply how extensive the crimes allegedly committed by Lincoln personnel in Pattaya were. The bigger question is this: How does a military that has kept its personnel at sea for nearly 300 days intend to return them to the battlefield—and keep them there—in a war of attrition with no clear end in sight?

Earlier, authorities said Soekarno-Hatta International Airport had been temporarily closed since 1.30 am Sunday (1830GMT Saturday).

Authorities said they continued to monitor the movement of the volcanic ash and were coordinating with airport operators, AirNav Indonesia and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

A total of 33 flights were canceled due to the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport alone.

Around 23,000 passengers were affected by the closures, while 170 aircraft that had remained overnight on the apron at Soekarno-Hatta were confirmed safe.

China, Singapore Launch Joint Maritime Exercise

The opening ceremony was held at a naval port in Zhanjiang. The exercise, conducted in the waters and airspace around the city, features live-fire drills, replenishment-at-sea, and joint search-and-rescue operations.

Two warships participate in the exercise -- the Chinese guided-missile frigate Dali and Singapore's frigate RSS Steadfast, Xinhua reported.

The exercise aims to deepen mutual trust, strengthen practical cooperation, and enhance their ability to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability, according to China's Ministry of National Defense earlier this week.

According to the ministry, the exercise is conducted in two phases, covering in-port exchanges and at-sea drills. The two sides will exchange expertise on diving operations, submarine search and rescue, and underwater medicine, and conduct drills in communications, replenishment-at-sea, joint maritime strikes, and joint search and rescue.

Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe said the joint search-and-rescue drills have important practical significance, given the heavy maritime traffic and complex weather and sea conditions in the South China Sea.

Under the search-and-rescue zones designated by the International Maritime Organization, both China and Singapore have maritime rescue responsibilities in relevant waters of the South China Sea, which requires their naval forces to fulfill corresponding duties, Zhang said.

He also noted that live-fire exercises and replenishment-at-sea help enhance the two navies' combat capabilities.

China and Singapore held their first bilateral maritime exercise in 2015. Such joint exercises have become a regular part of military exchanges between the two countries in recent years. In May 2025, the Chinese Navy dispatched a guided-missile frigate and a mine countermeasure vessel to Singapore for a joint exercise.

In addition to regular joint maritime exercises with Singapore, China also carries out routine joint drills and training with neighboring countries including Thailand and Cambodia.

India’s Gen Alpha School Protests Demand Education Reforms

In Uttar Pradesh’s Samuhi Bhatpurwa village, 122 primary school students, some as young as six, refused to attend classes on August 22 until authorities promised to replace their dilapidated school building.

Part of the school remains in ruins after a wall collapsed in 2023 and severely injured a girl.

Following the protest, Block education officer Deepak Awasthi told the students that a new building would be constructed soon.

Similar protests have been reported in at least 10 states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, with students citing shortages of teachers, drinking water, electricity, benches and safe classrooms.

The protests come after a wave of Gen Z demonstrations over examination paper leaks, unemployment and flaws in India’s education system.

The youth-led Cockroach Janata Party, or CJP, has since launched its ‘School Thik Karo (Fix The Schools)’ campaign in support of school students demanding better conditions.

“During our Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi, we met many young children and their parents who had travelled from rural areas,” Ratna Singh, the CJP’s legal affairs head, told Al Jazeera.

“They spoke about the poor condition of schools, the shortage of teachers and potholed, untarred roads leading to schools, among other issues.”

India operates one of the world’s largest school systems, with 247 million students enrolled in 1.5 million schools.

Government data shows improvements in access to education and teacher-pupil ratios, but many government-run schools still lack basic infrastructure and staff.

“The children are demanding their rights. They want teachers, benches, school buildings, drinking water, electricity and toilets,” Bengaluru-based education rights activist Nagasimha Rao told Al Jazeera.

“Unfortunately, for a long time, the basic infrastructure and manpower to run schools have been missing.”

Under India’s Right to Education Act, children aged six to 14 are entitled to education meeting prescribed standards for infrastructure, sanitation, safety and teacher availability.

However, government data shows that more than 100,000 schools have only one teacher serving all grades.

The protests have also drawn attention to poor food quality in some schools participating in India’s midday meal programme.

Educationist Swarna Rajagopalan said the school system required systemic reforms, including better infrastructure and improved teacher recruitment.

With more than 30 percent of India’s population under 18, education activists say the growing protests could also pose a future political challenge for governments.

“The children are our future. If they don’t get proper education in a conducive atmosphere, it would derail India’s growth,” education activist Akash Sarkar told Al Jazeera.

“These children are tomorrow’s voters too.”
