“Israeli” Forces Conduct New Raids in Southern Syria

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), an “Israeli” unit consisting of three military vehicles entered the area surrounding al-Samdaniyah, where soldiers set up a temporary checkpoint and searched people passing through before later withdrawing.

In a separate operation after midnight, an “Israeli” force comprising more than 15 military vehicles entered the village of al-Asha in southern Quneitra.

SANA reported that the occupation forces raided a residential home and a livestock feed warehouse before leaving the village.

The latest incursions come days after Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa condemned continued “Israeli” violations, warning that they threaten regional security and reiterating Syria's demand for the occupation to withdraw from Syrian territory.

During a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Damascus, al-Sharaa said lasting stability requires international efforts to compel “Israel” to adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

He also called for an active French role in stopping what he described as continued “Israeli” escalations and ensuring respect for international agreements.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the “Israeli” entity has carried out at least 38 attacks on Syrian territory since the beginning of 2026.

SOHR said the attacks include two airstrikes and 37 ground incursions, resulting in the destruction or damage of approximately 13 military sites, including weapons depots, military positions, headquarters, and vehicles.

The monitoring group added that five people have been killed in the attacks, with airstrikes targeting areas along the Syrian-Lebanese border and the Damascus countryside, while ground operations have primarily focused on Daraa and Quneitra provinces.

Real Reason Behind Macron's Hasty Trip Through Damascus

In a surprise move, Emmanuel Macron became the first senior Western official to visit Damascus since Julani, Syria's interim president, came to power in late 2024. During the visit, Macron sought to portray France as "Syria's old friend." In a symbolic, tourism-style gesture, he visited the Umayyad Mosque and dined at a restaurant in Damascus's historic district. The available evidence, however, indicates that the trip was driven less by engagement and cooperation than by France's domestic and foreign challenges, particularly its diminishing role in the strategic landscape of West Asia. It can already be said that Macron is effectively incapable of fulfilling the promises he made to Syria's self-proclaimed leaders.

Syrian Refugees: Macron's Electoral Card Ahead of Domestic Political Competition

During the visit, without acknowledging France's role in Syria's crises, from the Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916) to the present, Macron attempted to present himself as Syria's savior. One of the central themes of his remarks was the issue of Syrian refugees and their repatriation from France to Syria.

France, one of the primary destinations for refugees, particularly from Africa and West Asia, hosts a significant Syrian refugee population. As extremist movements have gained ground in Western societies, including France, opposition to refugees has effectively become one of the main tools of electoral competition.

Members of Macron's Renaissance party are entering the political contest at a time when the French president has achieved little of note in the economy, domestic policy, or France's global standing and now faces serious challengers. This is particularly significant given that, following a court ruling, Ms. Le Pen, one of the ruling party's principal rivals, is eligible to participate in the election.

Against this backdrop, part of Macron's objective in visiting Syria appears to have been to demonstrate determination in resolving the issue of Syrian refugees, a matter that could become a political asset for the ruling party in the next election.

An Attempt to Return to the Stage: France Sidelined in West Asia's Strategic Landscape

Although Macron's visit to Damascus sought to invoke France's historical role in West Asia, including the legacy of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the reality is that Paris no longer plays a decisive role in regional developments.

Even in Lebanon, the country's affairs are being addressed through the 14-point Iran-US understanding on the one hand and the trilateral US-Lebanon-Zionist regime negotiations on the other, while France has effectively been excluded from both processes.

In the Palestinian issue, developments in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, Iran-US negotiations, and other major regional dossiers, France, along with other European countries, has been reduced to a marginal player.

Given the upcoming meeting between Trump and Julani, which could deliver the final blow to France's traditional regional role, Macron's trip to Damascus before attending the NATO summit in Türkiye appears intended to preserve at least a minimal French presence in West Asia. Yet Syria's fragmentation into disparate territories, together with the occupation by the US, Türkiye, and the Zionist regime, has effectively stripped the visit of any meaningful value for either Paris or Macron personally.

The significance of the visit for Macron becomes even clearer considering that France is also struggling within its traditional sphere of influence in Africa. Most recently, relations between Paris and Burkina Faso have further deteriorated, with France facing the prospect of expulsion from the country.

Grand Promises, Limited Capacity: Macron's Inability to Meet Julani's Expectations

Although Macron made sweeping economic promises in an effort to project French influence in Syrian society amid competition with the US, the Zionist regime, Türkiye, the UK, Germany, and several Arab countries, Julani likewise sought to amplify the importance of the visit. By highlighting issues such as economic recovery, attracting foreign investment, and claiming an agreement to receive eight French Airbus aircraft, he attempted to portray himself as capable of solving the country's problems and reinforcing his fragile hold on power. In reality, however, Macron lacks the ability to deliver either on Julani's objectives or on his own stated promises.

First, Syria's ruling authorities lack genuine stability and effective sovereignty. Rather than governing all of Syria, they are essentially the self-proclaimed rulers of part of Damascus. On the one hand, portions of the country are administered autonomously without recognizing the central government, while on the other, the civil war continues across Syria. Moreover, the record of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's crimes has created serious obstacles to foreign relations with this self-proclaimed government.

Second, Syria is effectively divided among occupying powers and external actors, including the US, the Zionist regime, Türkiye, and several Arab states. Under such conditions, there is fundamentally little room for France to play a meaningful role.

Third, Syria's foremost issue today is the Zionist regime's occupation. Julani himself asked Macron to help secure the regime's withdrawal from Syrian territory. However, the French leadership's dependence on Zionist lobbying has made such a demand impossible to realize. This was evident during the visit, as Macron refrained from condemning the occupation or taking any meaningful position on the issue.

Taken together, Macron's visit was above all a public relations exercise intended to project the image of France's continued relevance in the strategic landscape of West Asia. In practice, however, Paris, like other European countries, no longer possesses decisive influence, not only in West Asia but in broader global affairs as well, and is now paying the price for surrendering its strategic independence to the US and the Zionist regime.

Syria’s Interior Ministry said four police officers were among those wounded in the blasts, the state news agency SANA reported on Tuesday.

Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising over the city.

The blasts occurred near the Ministry of Tourism and a hotel where Macron was meant to be staying during a visit to the capital for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmad Al-Sharaa.

Macron’s office said the president, who was on his way to meet Al-Sharaa, did not hear the blasts and the visit continued as normal.

The Interior Ministry told SANA that the blasts took place “outside the security zone designated for the French President’s residence, and did not pose any direct threat to the residence or the official visit program, which is proceeding according to the planned schedule”.

Authorities have sealed off roads and an investigation is under way.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the two explosive devices were improvised. One was placed inside a vehicle parked along the roadside, while the other was concealed in a trash container,” the Interior Ministry said, as cited by SANA.

“Investigations are under way to establish the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.”

In a statement released on Monday, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned Israel’s acts of aggression against Syria, its recent artillery strikes on the governorates of Quneitra and Dara’a, saying such actions endanger civilians and represent a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty as well as a clear infringement of international law.

Aboul Gheit stated that the ongoing violations by Israeli occupation forces pose a risk of igniting broader regional conflict, expanding the fronts of warfare, and undermining efforts aimed at restoring security and stability.

He emphasized that the use of force by Israel is intolerable to the international community.

Aboul Gheit urged the United Nations Security Council to take action by putting an end to these aggressive behaviors and ensuring that Israel adheres to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

President of the Arab Parliament, Mohamed Ahmed al-Yamahi, also censured the occupying Tel Aviv regime’s blatant aggression on Syrian territory and the artillery shelling of the provinces of Quneitra and Dara’a.

Yamahi further emphasized full solidarity with Syria and support for any action that the country takes to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He called on the international community and the UN Security Council to take immediate action to stop these acts of aggression, which are escalating tensions in the region.

The president of the Arab Parliament finally emphasized the legislature’s unwavering support for Syria’s security, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and declared that Syria’s stability is among the fundamental pillars of the security of the Arab world.

Since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government in early December 2024, the Israeli military has been conducting airstrikes targeting military installations, facilities, and arsenals previously operated by the Syrian army.

Israel has faced widespread criticism for ending the 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria and taking advantage of the chaos in the war-torn nation to seize territory.

Despite the ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) regime’s pledges of cooperation with Tel Aviv, Israel has remained unwilling to withdraw from Syria.

The two sides have been engaged in on-and-off talks to reach a “security agreement”, but no deal or concrete progress has been announced.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered his forces to push deeper into Syrian territory beyond the 1967-occupied Golan Heights and seize several strategic locations.

The bulk of the Israeli attacks have been concentrated in the southern Syrian governorates of Quneitra, Dara’a, and Damascus, which account for nearly 80 percent of all recorded Israeli attacks.

SANA reported an Israeli force entered the village of Ain al-Eid earlier in the day.

The force set up a military checkpoint, searched passersby and raided the home of a local resident, according to the agency.

It added that another Israeli force, consisting of four military vehicles, entered the village of Ain al-Ziwan in southern Quneitra on Friday, Anadolu reported.

That force raided the home of a local resident and detained him before withdrawing from the area, the agency said.

Israeli forces have carried out near-daily incursions in southern Syria, including raids, checkpoints, house searches and detentions, according to Syrian media.

Following the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad's government on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria void and moved into the UN-monitored buffer zone.

Between Document and Shadow: A Case Revived Once Again

According to Nakamitsu, in early May, a team from the “Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)” traveled to Syria and, after visiting several sites, is now preparing a report indicating that a significant quantity of undeclared chemical weapons, related materials, and associated documentation, including evidence of chemical munitions that had not previously been declared, has been discovered. She also claimed that missiles had been found that were of the same type as those used in the August 2013 chemical attack on the Syrian city of Ghouta.

This purportedly security-enhancing report was released only a short time after the visit to Syria and at a moment when the international body's track record of issuing biased and commissioned reports aligned with Western interests once again raises questions about the integrity of global monitoring institutions. The timing of the report, coinciding with the rapid developments in West Asia and US efforts to rescue the Zionist regime, disarm the Resistance, and justify new rounds of military adventurism, has further deepened these doubts.

From Alleged Discovery to Political Whitewashing: Project of Cleansing Terrorism's Image

The UN report on Syrian chemical weapons is being presented with extensive detail and broad media amplification, yet the insistence on attributing these weapons to the Assad government before the completion of the necessary reviews and investigations, as well as the emphasis on the role of the Jolani government in the alleged discoveries, warrants serious scrutiny.

In this context, “Vasily Nebenzya”, Russia’s representative to the UN, stated: “It is not surprising that the OPCW, without conducting sufficient investigations, is rushing to point the finger at a particular party regarding the materials recently discovered.”

Given the OPCW’s history of being repeatedly accused of producing selective and commissioned reports, and considering how such reports have been used in cases such as the 2003 occupation of Iraq and dozens of US-led wars around the world, the latest report appears less reflective of objective truth and more aligned with Western policies aimed at whitewashing terrorism, namely the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham government led by Jolani.

This interpretation is reinforced as European countries speak of lifting sanctions on Syria, the US announces expanded relations with Damascus, and “Tom Barrack” is appointed as Trump’s special envoy for Iraq and Syria. This process of political rehabilitation is unfolding even as reports continue to describe severe security and economic conditions in parts of Syria, particularly in Alawite-populated areas.

Diverting Public Attention from US and Zionist Regime Occupation

This alleged report has emerged while two major developments are underway in Syria. On one hand, the Zionist regime continues to occupy areas stretching from the Golan Heights to the outskirts of Damascus and continues bombing Syrian security, military, and economic infrastructure. On the other hand, the US is seeking to expand its presence in Syria in pursuit of dominance over energy resources and the transformation of the country into a base for its regional operations.

In this context, the report could serve as a tool for justifying the Zionist regime’s occupation and aggressions under the pretext of eliminating Syria’s unconventional weapons, a narrative that seeks to recast an occupying regime as an actor claiming to safeguard global security. The US, meanwhile, can use such allegations and the cover of cooperation with the UN to legitimize the continuation of its occupation and exploitation of Syrian resources.

This scenario appears even more plausible as reports emerge of a renewed activation of Daesh terrorist group, allegedly supported by Jolani, the US, and the Zionist regime, for operations targeting regional security.

Engineering Insecurity Through Disarmament of Resistance

A key point is that since ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Storm’, and particularly since the Ramadan war and the extensive scale of US-Zionist crimes, including the martyrdom of 168 students from Minab alongside the deaths of tens of thousands of children in Gaza and Lebanon, a global wave of opposition to the US and Zionists has taken shape. In contrast, the steadfastness of the Resistance Front has presented a new model of asymmetric warfare that enjoys broad support from global public opinion.

Having failed to achieve meaningful gains against the pillars of the Resistance through either military means or diplomacy, the US now faces a reality in which Iran has become a decisive actor in regional equations, while its intelligent management of the Strait of Hormuz has created a new structure in global relations. Alongside this, Resistance groups from Iraq and Lebanon to Yemen and Palestine have become influential components in regional decision-making.

Under these circumstances, it appears that the US, through a new case-building effort against the Resistance and by advancing claims of hidden chemical weapons within the Assad government, which had been regarded as an ally of the Resistance, is seeking to damage the image of the Resistance and increase pressure for the disarmament of these groups. The ultimate objective of this approach is to leave regional countries defenseless against the Zionist regime while simultaneously increasing pressure on Iran during negotiations.

The premature statements of “Tammy Bruce”, US representative and deputy representative to the UN, who identified the Assad government as responsible for chemical concealment before investigations had been completed, may serve as evidence of such a design—a design whose ultimate aim is the disarmament of Resistance groups and the creation of conditions for action against Iran.

Claims of a trilateral agreement among the US, Lebanon, and the Zionist regime to disarm Hezbollah; Tom Barrack’s mission in Iraq to disarm Resistance groups; Grossi’s biased report on Iran’s nuclear activities; and Trump’s repeated assertions about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons together form components of this broader scenario. Simultaneously, this scenario sidelines the issue of the Zionist regime’s covert nuclear activities and its crimes in Gaza and the West Bank, while even placing the massacre of Minab’s students within a broader effort to whitewash and justify a new phase of hostile measures against Iran.

Repeating a Familiar Pattern Under Guise of International Reports

Overall, what is evident in the UN’s alleged report regarding Syrian chemical weapons during the Assad era bears striking similarities to the claims advanced by the White Helmets in previous years, as well as to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s selective reports on Iran, reports that have consistently raised serious questions about the professional integrity and impartiality of these institutions.

This is particularly noteworthy given that such reports are released precisely at moments when the US is more actively than ever seeking to justify, whitewash, normalize, and legitimize its own actions and crimes, as well as those of the Zionist regime.

According to available information, the military vehicles reached the vicinity of the Wadi al-Raqad bridge, where they stopped and deployed in the area for a period of time, without clear details emerging regarding the nature of the mission or the reasons behind the incursion.

The governor added that the actions carried out by the "Israeli" occupation forces [IOF] inside the area remain unclear, while a state of anticipation prevailed in the surrounding region amid the absence of any official comment on the incident.

The Syrian Observatory also reported on that IOF had carried out another incursion into Syrian territory a day earlier, with a military unit consisting of six vehicles and a white minibus entering the town of al-Rafid in the Quneitra countryside.

These movements came amid continued "Israeli" attacks on Syrian territory and airspace, particularly in southern Syria, including ground incursions, the establishment of temporary checkpoints, road closures, and raids and arrests targeting Syrian civilians.

Earlier, Human Rights Watch revealed that the "Israeli" occupation entity had approved a plan worth up to $334 million aimed at expanding settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan.

The organization also stated that IOF had crossed the 1974 disengagement line and begun forcibly displacing residents from Syrian villages in the area.

Eight "Israeli" incursions were reported in 72 hours across southern Syria’s Daraa and Quneitra, including armored patrols in Maariya and Yarmouk Basin and earthworks with observation points in Tal al-Ahmar, amid claims of intensified ground activity.
